About Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

Oriental Medicine is a refined medical system which has been used for more than 3000 years to diagnose and treat illness, prevent disease and improve well-being. It is effective for physical, psychological and emotional problems.

Acupuncture is one of Oriental Medicine's most important treatment modalities. While science has recently determined that human beings are complex bioelectric systems, this understanding has been the foundation of acupuncture practice for thousands of years.

Energy circulates thoughout the body along well defined pathways, called meridians. Points on the skin along these pathways are energetically connected to specific organs, body structures and functional systems. If this energy circulation is disrupted, optimal function is affected, resulting in pain or illness. Acupuncture points are stimulated to balance the circulation of energy, which in turn influences the health of the entire being.

Acupuncture needles are quite thin—about the size of a hair. They are solid, and nothing is injected through them. Over the centuries, needle insertion techniques have been refined, enabling the skilled physician to place a needle with little or no sensation. arrowDuring treatment, various sensations, such as warmth or pressure may be felt, but these sensations should not be painful.

It is not necessary to use needles. Other techniques, such as Japanese acupuncture, Laser, or Acupressure are effective alternatives.

The effectiveness of Acupuncture is well documented and is endorsed as a system of primary health care by the World Health Organization. People from all walks of life and ages benefit greatly. Thoughout its long history, Oriental Medicine has established itself as a comprehensive system of health care that works.

About Kinesiology

Wholistic Kinesiology is the state of the art natural healing system that uses muscle testing to determine unique health needs. Because we are all individuals, our health needs are variable. A one size fits all approach leaves many unsatisfied. With muscle testing (kinesiology), underlying health imbalances can be determined easily and painlessly.

When muscles are tested while touching points on the body which correspond to organ systems or other imbalances, the muscle will respond with a strong or weak response depending on the underlying balance of the system being tested. In this manner we can literally ask the body where imbalances are.

We can detect imbalances before they become pathologies or even before they show up on blood tests.

This system is also used to determine very specific nutritional needs. We can determine which foods may be allergenic, beneficial or neutral; we can determine which vitamins, minerals or other nutrients you need and in what amounts. We can test a vitamin regime to determine if the right nutrients are being taken or if money is being thrown away on unnecessary purchases. We can determine if supplements are correcting underlying imbalances or not.

Every kind of health problem can benefit from Kinesiology. Underlying health imbalances including candida, parasites, and allergies can be identified and treated.

NAET ALLERGY ELIMINATION

Although allergies are most commonly identified with hayfever and seasonal reactions to pollen, it is not only the respiratory system that reacts to allergies. Other body systems that show the effects of allergy include the nervous system, gastrointestinal system, the colon, the liver, the cardiovascular system, muscular/skeletal system, the adrenals, and the ears.

Allergic reactions can be caused by certain foods, pollens, pet danders, dust mites and insect venoms. In addition, certain metals, lanolin, some cosmetic ingredients, certain drugs such as penicillin and aspirin, food additives, preservatives and foods such as milk, eggs, strawberries, wheat, nuts, and shellfish are all known for their connection to allergies. Infants and young children may be sensitive to cow's milk, which can cause skin rashes, colic, and diarrhea. In addition, links between emotional stress and the onset of allergy have been observed.

At Acupuncture Etc., we treat allergies by first ascertaining which foods and other substances cause allergy in the client by using kinesiology (muscle testing). Lab tests to test for allergic substances can also be ordered. Each client receives an individualized program which may include nutritional support, acupuncture and other body work, NAET Allergy Elimination, laser, and dietary recommendations.

NAET Allergy Elimination is a truly revolutionary system for dealing with allergies. It is a natural, drugless, painless, non-invasive method that can be used for one of the most stubborn health problems facing mankind today.

Allergens are cleared (treated) one at a time with this technique, and best results are obtained if allergens are cleared in a specific sequence. Normally only a few items are treated on a given day. The substance must then be completely avoided for 25 hours following the treatment. In addition, all the meridians are tested and, if needed, cleared to ensure they are all in balance. In most cases, all it takes it one session to permanently eliminate an allergy. Individuals who are highly sensitive may sometimes require additional combination clearings.

The Nambudripod Allergy Eliminaton technique (NAET) was developed by Devi Nambudripod. Dr. Nambudripod is a Medical Doctor, Chiropractic Physician, Acupuncturist, and PhD. She developed the technique after putting together all her disciplines to try to help herself with her own lifelong struggle with allergies and other health issues. She lived mainly on the two items that she was not allergic to: rice and broccoli. One day she came home from school and nibbled on a piece of carrot while waiting for her rice to cook. Within a few minutes she felt like she was going to pass out. She quickly began to insert acupuncture needles in herself and proceeded to pass out.

When she woke, she felt strangely different. She felt a renewed pleasant energy for the first time in a long time. She tested the carrot using Kinesiology and found that she tested strong for it. She ate another carrot and had no reaction. She determined that "My allergy to carrot was gone because of my contact with the carrot while undergoing acupuncture." She used this technique to clear herself of all her allergies and those of her family with great success. She now teaches this technique all around the country.

Over 10,000 practitioners have been trained in the NAET Allergy Elimination method all around the world over the last 20 years. Success rate for allergies is rated at 53 to 90% depending on the patient compliance.

About Herbs and Nutritional Supplements

Chinese herbal formulas and supplements precribed are high quality, manufactured in the United States, and subjected to scrutiny by the FDA. The affordability factor of herbal formulas is quite superior at this time.

Chinese herbal formulas are quite complex, usually made up of many herbs. The Chinese knowledge of herbal use is quite extensive and has been developed and tested over centuries.

Herbs work on the physical, subtle, and energetic, and gross levels. A person taking herbs can be affected physically, psychologically, and spiritually.

Compliance with dosage requirements is important for results.

Safety between herbal treatment and prescription medication is important. To avoid possible interactions and incompatibilities between herbs and pharmacueticals, it is important that your practitioner know if you are or may be pregnant, to separate taking herbs and pharmacueticals by two hours, make sure your practitioner has an up to date list of all medications being taken, and take herbs and supplements with a meal.

About Pain

Be prepared to know where the pain is, when it hurts, what makes it worse, and what makes it better. Dr. Gehring will want to know how you describe the pain. Is it sharp, dull and achy, constant, burning, tight, heavy, radiating, intermittent, stabbing, distending, numb, pins and needles, or pounding? All of these descriptions tell an acupuncturist a great deal about what is going on in the client's body.

Because Traditional Chinese Medicine theory teaches that pain in any area is a reflection of imbalance in the entire system, you will be asked other questions about your health as well.

Treatment modalities that may be used included acupuncture, acupressure, cupping, gua sha, Chinese massage (tuina), electrical stimulation, laser, herbal formulas and supplements.

About Smoking

Acupuncture has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of addictions, particularly to cigarettes. Acupuncture treatment for smoking cessation is a course of treatment with a minimum of 8 sessions. Treatments include acupuncture, NADA auricular proctocol, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique, and energy work.

About Women's Health

Dr. Gehring works with women in all phases of reproductive health ranging from difficult periods to inferility to menopause. Imbalances do create symptoms, weight gain, and menstrual, fertility, or menopausal difficulties.

Reproductive issues for which acupuncture and herbs are very effective include relieving pain conditions, smoothing out irregularities, reducing nausea from pregnancy, and taking the kinks out of the transition into menopause.

Dr. Gehring uses kinesiology to find imbalances in the endrocrine systems and Hair Mineral Analysis lab tests to determine levels and ratios of minerals, trace minerals, and toxic exposure.

The New Mexico Infertility Consortium is a coordination between acupuncturists and Dr. Magarelli at UNM. Dr. Magarelli is an infertility specialist doing IVF procedures. Acupuncture is administered before and after the in vitro fertilization procedure. Dr. Gehring is a member of the Consortium. The protocol used by the Consortium has been shown to raise pregnancy rate.

About Lyme Disease

It is estimated that 20,000 people are diagnosed each year with Lyme disease. Actual numbers of newly infected persons per year of Lyme Borreliosis are estimated at 90,000 per year.

Lyme organisms have been found to adhere to cultured endothelial and epithelium cells, differentiated neural cells, brain cells, and glial cells. Typically, Lyme spirochetes live deeper within tissues than other kinds of bacteria. They can move much faster in viscous material like collagenous tissues than they can in blood.

Lab tests for Lyme include the ELISA test and Western Blot. Standard course of treatment is antibiotics. Stephen Harrod buhner states in "Healing Lyme" that studies show effectiveness rates for antibiotics run from 70 - 90% and often there is a relapse rate of up to 35%.

To successfully treat Lyme inflections and the co-infections of Lyme, four simultaneous approaches are necessary: killing the spirochetes, immune modulations and support, collagenous tissue support, and symptomatic help. Dr. Gehring uses an Lyme Protocol developed by Dr. Creelman of Santa Fe, NM, to treat Lyme patients. This protocol is based on acupuncture principles, utilizes laser, and nutritional supplementation.

With regular treatments, many of the symptoms of Lyme: brain fog and confusion, stiffness, joint pain and arthritis, eye, ear, heart problems, urinary problems, chronic fatigue, tremors, digestive issues and more can be reduced and moderated. While Lyme may not be cured, at the least a client must have every opportunity to live as full a life as possible with quality of life.
